KENTUCKY — By Ed DeRosa
Looking for an appetizer to all the stakes action this weekend? Look no further than Friday night at Turfway Park, which plays host to the Cincinnati Trophy Stakes for three-year-old fillies as race 6 on its nine race card.
Even better: there is some wagering opportunity, as a couple of fillies who do not figure to be favored should perform well against this group.
The first piece of the puzzle to fall into place (or remove) is whether either of the horses on the also eligible list–#13 Impel or #14 Spice–draw into the race. The former figures to be one of the favorites if drawn in and has some early speed, which is bad news for #4 Living Magic, who also has some early zip.
#7 Cozee Rags ran a career best last out when going from last-to-second from the rail. That was sprinting, but she showed some signs of life around two turns two back. The price should be right if both #s 4 & 13 are in this race.
#10 Everland looked awesome when claimed out of the maiden ranks two back and backed it up with a “full-of-run” win last out. This is another who figures to benefit if #13 draws in.
So, it’s a sort of a choose-your-adventure approach to how to wager on this race. If #13 draws in then I’d key #s 7 and 10 with 4 & 13. If the 13 does not draw in, then that moves the 4 way up because she’s more controlling speed. In that situation I would key #4 over #s 7 & 10.
THE BETS:
IF #13 IS IN
$1 exacta part wheel- 7, 10 with 4, 7, 10, 13 and 4, 13 with 7, 10 ($10)
IF #13 SCRATCHES
$1 exacta box- 4, 7, 10; $1 exacta key box 4 with 7, 10; $1 exacta key 4 over 7, 10 ($12)
